In order to be successful, you need to know your limitations. As an independent consultant, I know that it is not possible for me to help you with all of your Information Systems projects, so as we work together on projects, I will break them down into one of 5 categories.
I KNOW ALL ABOUT THIS TOPIC -- I can review your current situation, recommend a modification, enhancement, or alternative, and can execute it.
I KNOW ALL ABOUT THIS TOPIC, BUT -- I can review your current situation, recommend a modification, enhancement, or alternative, and can refer you to someone (or help you find someone) who can execute it, and I can oversee that process.
I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE, BUT DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THIS TOPIC -- I can work with others who do to ensure that they are doing what is best for your company in the current situation.
I DON'T KNOW VERY MUCH ABOUT THIS TOPIC -- I know someone who does have experience in this area and can refer you to them or help you find someone with the skills you need.
I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TOPIC -- I can't help you with this project, nor do I know anyone who can. I'm not going to lead you on and struggle to make you think I know what I am doing.
